Test your sanity in this action-RPG
Mortal Shell is a deep action-RPG developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack. Set in a shattered world, this game will test your resilience and sanity as you strive for survival. In the game, humanity has been lost and zealous foes fester in ruins. Doing the bidding of the Dark Father, you will set out on a journey to find the hidden sanctum of the devout followers. In the hallowed grounds, you must defeat enemies by occupying the bodies of the dead warriors and use their masteries of combat to defeat the enemies.
Unashamedly Souls-like
Mortal Shell is a role-playing game that takes heavy inspiration from the popular game, Dark Souls. However, it is on a slightly more condensed scale, owing to its 15-man design team. At first glance, the game is yet another jaunt through a bleak fantasy world, fighting against monsters. The difference is that you need to possess the bodies of fallen warriors to protect your fragile skeleton from harm and to gain their combat skills.
The bodies that you possess serve as classes. You can choose to use a jack-of-all-trades warrior or a poisoner, who can swap health for stamina and can upgrade himself to turn toxic damage into a healing balm. The combat in the game, like other Souls-like genres, is very strategic and deliberate. You need to calculate the movements of your enemies and only unleash counterblows when an opportunity opens.
Mortal Shell employs a non-linear campaign. The game will test the skills of anyone who wishes to embark on a journey across marsh-infested lowlands, an ancient crypt frozen into the crest of a mountain, and a gargantuan cathedral of obsidian rock. However, while it is heavily inspired by the Souls series, there will be no online multiplayer components, such as PvP or co-op modes. It has been confirmed that there will be no multiplayer modes currently in the works for the game.
Awaken the warriors
Despite not having an original concept, Mortal Shell is still a great game to play for action-RPG lovers. The game has captured the dark fantasy world of the genre. Add in hard-hitting monsters, and you will have an action-packed game that will keep you entertained for hours. All in all, this is a game that is worth trying if you fancy the idea of walking a mile in another man’s shoes—or this case, body.
